Understanding And Then Treating Genital Warts
By: Dave Robinson

More than likely, you do not know if you have genital warts or not. Because of their location and because of how difficult they are to see to the naked eye, many people do not know that they have them at all. Genital warts are somewhat like warts that many people get throughout their body. They occur in the genital area. For the women these would show up on the vulva, vagina, cervix, or anus. In the male, they will be on or near the penis, scrotum and the anus. They look as if they are bumps, sometimes raised.

What Causes Genital Warts?

Genital warts are caused by the same types of things that cause warts throughout the rest of the body. A group of viruses which are called human papillomavirus (or HPV) are the main cause of warts in general. There are about thirty of them that can cause genital warts. You can get these warts from sexual conduct such as vaginal, oral, or anal sex. They can not be passed through public uses such as toilet seats, towels or anything else. The fact is, though, the more partners that you have, the more your chances increase in contacting genital warts.

The Symptoms Of Genital Warts

Unfortunately, there are no symptoms of having these warts. In fact, you don’t even have to be able to see the warts to spread them. Many people can have genital warts and not know it. They do not cause any pain and they do not itch. So, how do you know if you have them? You can find out by taking your questions to your doctor. They can visually inspect the area for them, and run tests to show results. Pap smears can be used as well as solutions that make them more visible.

If you have been exposed to genital warts, it may take anywhere from several weeks up to several months for them to become noticeable. Doctor’s believe that when the wart is seen, that the virus that is causing it is active and more likely to be spread. When the warts can not be seen easily, it is thought that the virus is still there, just weaker and less likely to be passed. In fact the only way to know if you have this condition is to get regular medical examinations to determine it.

The Complications

Genital warts can come and go. The virus can be treated. It can go away on its own rarely as well. But, it is especially important for individuals, especially women, who have been exposed to have them treated. Untreated genital warts on the cervix of a woman can lead to cervical cancer.

The Prevention Of Genital Warts

The only sure fire way not to get them is not to have sex. At the very least, the use of a latex condom can and does help in prevention but it does not prevent it 100% of the time.

Treatment

There is no cure for the virus that causes genital warts. There are vaccines that are being worked on, but no cure is in sight just yet. There are treatments that can be done to help with the reoccurrence of the warts themselves though. Warts can be removed, if necessary through freezing them off or using chemical or laser treatments.
